Police arrest 31 motorists for DUI

During the week of March 5-11, Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, 13.

• Puna, 10.

• South Hilo, six.

• South Kohala, two.

A number of those arrests led to multiple charges, including one for open vessel of alcohol, two each for promoting a dangerous drug, marijuana possession and driving while license suspended, and nine for driving without a license and insurance.

There have been 232 major accidents so far this year compared with 268 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.4 percent.

To date, there have been six traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with four at this time last year, an increase of 33 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
